The exhibition IVAN LACKOVIĆ / ARTISTIC EKSPERIMENTS was held in CMNA from November 22nd till December 9th 2007.
Ivan Lacković (Batinske, 1931 – Zagreb, 2004) is a classic of Croatian naïve art, celebrated for his paintings and drawings of idyllic landscapes and for his allegorical compositions.
On this occasion a less well known part of the oeuvre were featured, Lacković’s original experiments inspired by certain surrealist ideas. Although created continually since the end of the 1970s, they have been much less often exhibited. The artist combined in them a number of different procedures, from incidental doodling following the automatic movements of the hand, without any prior plan or concept; then wiping the brush leaving prints of it on paper; to subsequent final drawing, by way of a synthesis of form. Blotches initially spontaneous were turned through the artist’s treatment into associative and biomorphic forms.
Thirty paintings were exhibited, from the donation that the heirs of Ivan Lacković – his wife Ana and children Ivan and Ivana – made to the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art.
Author of the exhibition and catalogue is Svjetlana Sumpor.
